Sobey's Grocery Stores

Client:
Sobeys

Repeat business is a mark of trust, which is why BMR is thrilled to have been involved in more than 100 projects for Sobeys, including every one of the retailer’s new construction and renovation projects in the Maritime Provinces during the past 15 years. We know that Sobeys’ stores, as an important part of the community, cannot shut down during renovations, even for a few days. This means finding efficient ways of keeping stores accessible to shoppers throughout the process.

The location on Panavista Drive in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is a prime example. To reduce noise for Sobeys’ customers, we designed enclosures around the roof-top mechanical equipment, followed by structural redesigns to support these loads. In addition – because the building was carved into a hillside – we created large cast-in-place reinforced concrete retaining walls, including one that supported the roof structure while resisting 20 feet of earth pressure.

Along with extensive work on retail outlets, BMR has delivered for many of Sobeys’ sister companies as well, including shopping centres, movie theatres, department stores and corporate headquarters in Stellarton. We’ve also performed specialized work on several distribution centres, all of which bring unique challenges for insulation, cooling, and operation.
