Pictou County Municipal Office Building
FBM Architecture & Interior Design
2010
Completed in 2010 in collaboration with our partners at FBM Architecture, this 10,000 square foot, two level municipal office facility in Pictou County, Nova Scotia includes Pictou County municipal office space, municipal council facilities, as well as community meeting spaces.
The building design solution included large areas of glazing within the exterior wall envelope that required careful coordination with the structural steel building frame. The structural steel building frame, laterally supported by structural steel brace frames, provided a durable, low maintenance structural solution for the project.
Key Points
- Carefully coordinated rigid insulation details around the foundation to minimize thermal bridging and moisture infiltration
- Balanced approach to durability vs economy by including a composite second floor slab design to allow the floor and beams to work together, thereby reducing the weight of steel required to carry the specified loads
- To ensure a smooth construction process, multiple detail coordination requirements with other disciplines such as high floor load spaces, an interior vault, as well as various mechanical features
