Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex
Architecture49 Inc.
2018
Completed in 2018 in collaboration with our partners at Architecture49, this 18,000 square foot mixed-use recreational and community office facility in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia includes the Chedabucto Fitness Center, community meeting space, Municipality of the District of Guysborough Recreation Department, gymnasium, as well as a refrigerated outdoor skating loop among other amenities.
To balance both building longevity and economy, the building structure solution consisted of a combination of structural steel perimeter and corridor frames and intermediate pre-engineered timber trusses. The timber roof truss design included long-span trusses to maximize open space (structurally) within the building, thereby, allowing for future flexibility in re-purposing the interior spaces.
Key Points
- Cast-in-place rigid insulation within the perimeter foundation walls that continues uninterrupted into the exterior wall envelope, thereby eliminating costly thermal bridges at the base of the building
- Reinforced concrete suspended slab mezzanine floor supported on load-bearing masonry block walls for maximum durability under heavy load requirements
- Fully insulated, reinforced exterior rink slab design, complete with galvanized reinforcing and condition specific mix design all for maximum durability and longevity
