NSCC Marconi Campus Replacement

Client:
Barrie & Langille Architects
Year Completed:
2023 (Projected)

Completed with our partners at Barrie and Langille Architects and Moriyama and Teshima Architects, the $170 million NSCC Marconi Waterfront Campus is located in the heart of downtown Sydney, Nova Scotia. The 300,000 square foot waterfront campus consists of four distinct buildings that interconnect in various ways including via several structural steel pedways. The campus boasts both academic and hands-on learning spaces that include welding, carpentry, plumbing trades, cosmetology, nursing, child-care labs, and much more. The large open-concept common spaces include stunning cantilevered floor designs situated over multiple levels and all overlooking the harbour. The new Marconi Campus was designed in accordance with LEED Gold V4 standards.

The challenging site conditions were overcome with a substructure design that included a series of structural steel H-piles and concrete pile caps all supporting a reinforced concrete structural foundation slab at grade level. The building superstructure consists of a series of structural steel building frames that included a number of exposed structural elements. Careful coordination was required with the architect to achieve the desired finish and connection aesthetic.
